Victor Cojocaru, Alexander Rubel (eds.). Mobility in Research on the Black Sea Region (Pontica et Mediterranea, vol. VI). Proceedings of the International Symposium. Language: English, Geman, French
The volume collects 23 papers that treat multiple aspects of mobility between individuals, cities and regions of the Black Sea in Antiquity such as cultural, political and economic networks, interactions between Greeks and Barbarians or how the ancient authors highlight themes of distance and knowledge or of good life and leisure in the polis. All of the contributions address recent literary, epigraphic, numismatic, iconographical or archaeological discoveries and provide opportunities to share perspectives, methods and frameworks from which to look at ancient texts and artefacts in order to gain a better understanding of the past or to make ancient objects or histories more meaningful for us today. At the same time this book proposes to understand the Black Sea as a discrete unit. Rather than dividing it among nations and states new generations of scholars are uncovering the ways in which what happened in one part of the sea was intimately linked with the fate of every other part of it.
