Category: Modern Bulgarian History
Language: Bulgarian
The Vrana Royal Palace is the creation of Tsar Ferdinand I (1861—1948), who was devoted to botany and ornithology. It is named after the first bird to land on its roof (a crow). The creation of the park, with its unique plant species brought from all over the world, took decades to become one of the most beautiful spots in Sofia.
It served as the primary residence of the royal family until 1946, after which it became the official residence of the state leadership of the People’s Republic. In 2001, King Simeon II and Princess Maria Luisa donated the park to the Sofia Municipality so that it could be opened to the public.
Today, Vrana Palace houses the Royal Scientific Institute and Museum. The book presents the rich 125-year history of the private residence of the Bulgarian kings.
