Time Spent in Detention: A 20-Year-Old's Experience in the Prisons and Camps of Communist Bulgaria
Задържано време. Един 20-годишен из затворите и лагерите на комунистическа България
Category: Socialist period in Bulgaria
Language: Bulgarian

In 1951, Mihail Petkov, barely 20 years old, was sentenced to 12 years of strict imprisonment for “organizing and leading a group with the aim of overthrowing, undermining, and weakening the established government through a coup.”
He spent nine years in communist prisons and labor camps. After the changes in 1989, he was among the founders of the Union of Democratic Forces, served as deputy chairman of the Bulgarian Social Democratic Party, was a member of the Seventh Grand National Assembly, and later became a diplomat.
His memoirs bear witness to the fate of one man and to years of Bulgarian history that continue to demand remembrance.
The book tells the story of a young man whose life was cut short almost at its very beginning by a conviction, imprisonment, and a labor camp. His memories, however, are not confined to the years of repression. They extend into Mihail Petkov’s later life and address the question of how a person carries on after such experiences.
The tone set by the first reviews of the book is unusually calm: without any heroic posturing or ostentatious bitterness. It is precisely this calmness that lends the narrative its weight.
