Milen Petrov. Тhe Crusade of Nicopolis 1396
Никополският кръстоносен поход (1396 г.)
Language: Bulgarian
On September 25, 1396, one of the largest and most fateful battles in the history of medieval Europe took place near the walls of the Danube fortress of Nicopolis. A massive coalition army, comprising the flower of the Western European knighthood, faced the advancing Ottoman Empire under the leadership of Sultan Bayezid I. Behind the scenes of the crusade, however, lay the true political mechanisms of the participating royal courts, which led to the dramatic epic at Nicopolis and the accompanying military clashes at Vidin and Oryahovo. The ensuing grand drama marked the end of our medieval statehood and cemented Ottoman dominance in the Balkans for centuries to come. For the knights of the Holy Roman Empire, this was their first serious clash with the Ottomans, but by no means their last. Europe’s conflicts with the Ottoman Empire continued until the very end of the 18th century and permanently reshaped the geopolitical map of the entire continent.
