Rostislav Botev. Serbo-Bulgarian War (1885)
Original name: Сръбско-българската война
Category: Post-Liberation period
Language: Bulgarian
The Serbian-Bulgarian War of 1885 was one of the key moments in modern Bulgarian history. The unification of the Principality of Bulgaria with Eastern Rumelia on September 6 was the first step on the road to national unification. But obstacles soon arose: Serbia declared that "the balance of power in the Balkans had been disrupted" and attacked Bulgaria in an attempt to expand its territory to the east. The Bulgarian army, however, surprised everyone with its courage, self-sacrifice, and combat skills, achieving brilliant victories at Slivnitsa, Vidin, and Pirot. These memorable battles led to Serbia's military defeat in just two weeks. The heroism and readiness to defend national interests demonstrated in this war lend it a special romanticism.
