“People’s Democracy” in Bulgaria (1944—1948): Ideas and Realities
„Народната демокрация“ в България (1944—1948). Идеи и реалности
Category: Contemporary Bulgarian history
Language: Bulgarian
The book presents a study of political, economic, and cultural life in Bulgaria during the period 1944–1948. It seeks to explain how “people’s democracy” became possible during those years and what its essence was in the context of relations among the victorious powers—the USSR, the United States, and the United Kingdom—at the end of World War II. The study analyzes the political clashes between the Communist Party and the opposition and the role of external factors in them; key events such as the path to the Republic and the new Constitution; foreign policy challenges (participation in the war against the Third Reich, the peace treaty and the victorious powers, relations with neighboring countries), as well as certain issues in economic and cultural life. This research highlights the transitional nature of the period.
