   The monograph examines the origin, genealogy, personality and demise of the independent Bulgarian ruler despot Alexius Slav (12071230) and shows the unknown sides of his relations with the Latin Empire of Constantinople, the Neo-Byzantine state of Epirus and the Bulgarian Kingdom of Tarnovo. The book explores the genealogy, lineage, knightly initiation and heraldry of the Bulgarian nobleman of Asenevtsi family and vassal of the Latin emperor Henry of Hainault and sheds new light on the development, borders and demise of his autonomous principality which encompassed the Rhodopes, Philippopolis region and Eastern Macedonia.
