   The emergence of diplomacy is an ongoing process whose roots can be traced back to the dawn of human civilization. It has been established that even in primitive times specific means of peaceful regulation of inter-tribal relations were necessary. This was made possible by the existing similarities both in social development and in the sacred law and customs of the different ethnic groups. Diplomacy has evolved and changed over the centuries. It is significantly influenced by existing religious beliefs, legal norms and prevailing moral and ethical conceptions in society. Gradually, three main factors emerged that gave rise to the need for diplomatic activity - war, peace and trade. Their role became evident after the emergence of ancient empires and city-states whose foreign policy relied on a combination of peaceful and military means. Also important was the emergence of writing, which contributed to the improvement of diplomatic practice and facilitated contacts between countries. New rules were established in the application of certain diplomatic activities. It was in antiquity that a number of means, forms and institutions of diplomacy were established which continued to exist in the Middle Ages.
