Power, Sovereignty, And Directing: An inquiry into performative force, interpretive freedom, and creative Autonomy
Language: English—Bulgarian (bilingual)
The central question of Gardev's study is: what is the power of the theatre director and how does it function? This question is explored using the tools of philosophy and the social sciences. But Gardev goes further than that. He often inverts the prism of analysis and, using his privileged experience as a theatre director, problematizes and criticizes a number of philosophical and social theories. He overtly draws on this experience, but uses it somewhat covertly because he does not articulate it in detail in order to avoid auto-ethnography and memoir. But this personal experience is there, even though the text keeps its theoretical distance from it. For Javor Gardev knows first-hand how the power through which the director mobilizes the text, the actors, the audience, and even the external environment of a performance, is actualized, and what can threaten its foundations. It is this privileged first-person knowledge that allows him to see the limitations of theories that operate with a flat and purely negative notion of "power,” and that conceive of power entirely as external coercion that is inherently unjust and must be rejected. The question of the power of the theatre director allows him to construct a holistic philosophy of power that is also a philosophy of freedom.
