   The challenges in modern medicine should be viewed in light of the historical evolution of moral norms and their contextual conditioning. The roots go back to Antiquity, and possible answers must be formulated through knowledge of the history of medicine. The publication combines insights from the history of ideas, recalling the important lines of tradition, but also highlighting what is new in practice. A broad chronological overview is provided—from early highly developed civilizations to Byzantium—in order to clarify historical interrelationships.
