Velizar Enchev. The Yugoslav idea
Велизар Енчев. Югославската идея
Language: Bulgarian

The idea of a federal state of all South Slavs and the development of the Yugoslav idea into a Serbian state doctrine in the 19th century is the focus of the narrative in this book. The author examines the transformation of the Yugoslav idea into a state doctrine of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in the early 20th century. But the renaming of the new state as the Kingdom of Yugoslavia and the imposition of the concept of one nation with three names did not erase the ethnic contradictions. The Serbian-Albanian, Serbian-Croatian and Serbian-Bulgarian conflicts in Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Vardar Macedonia were particularly destructive to the integrity of the Yugoslav kingdom. The Serbian line of territorial and ethnic advance in all directions also conflicted with the concept of state unification of the Bulgarians on the Balkan Peninsula. The parallel realization of Serbian and Bulgarian geopolitical interests in the 19th and 20th centuries made the plan for a federal state of all southern Slavs unfeasible. The centuries-old rivalry in the Balkans between Orthodoxy, Islam, and Catholicism further catalyzed inter-national feuds in the territory of the Yugoslav peoples. This monograph explores the origins, rise, and collapse of the Yugoslav idea; examines the conflicts destructive to the integrity of the Yugoslav kingdom; and traces in process the centuries-old rivalries in the Balkans.
