   The term mysteria was first used by Heraclitus of Ephesus (6th century BC). This word refers to a system of secret rituals dedicated to the worship of certain deities. Those initiated into them were called "mysts", i.e., "closed," because before entering the ritual hall, their eyes were blindfolded and they were not allowed to share the knowledge of the rituals they underwent. The mystery gives "secret knowledge." It must come "from outside" because it cannot be secret knowledge accessible to all compatriots. That is why the Greeks believed that their mysteries were based on the Thracian Orpheus, who in turn learned their secret in Egypt...
