The Unification against the Backroom Dealers: Politics and Memory (1885—1998)
Съединението. Дипломатическата битка за България
Language: Bulgarian. Category: Post-Liberation period
Reporting today on the events of September 6, 1885, contemporary Bulgarians are told how the day is supported by "the entire Bulgarian people" and "all Bulgarians", how it led to a demonstration of "the power of unity" and to the abandonment of "personal ambitions and tranquility." However, it is not very clear to the public that what happened was a victory for part of the Bulgarian political class and Prince Alexander I over what was then the "backroom power" that had dictated political life in both the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia for the past few years. In this case, "backroom politics" refers to the hidden power wielded by the Russian imperial court, the Asian Department in St. Petersburg, the Russian diplomatic agency in Sofia, and the Russian consulate in Plovdiv.
