   Kan Krum (803—814) elevates the Bulgarian khanate on the Danube to the position of Empire. Bulgaria stretched from the Tisza to the Dniester and from the Carpathian Mountains to the White Sea, a territory with a large population: a resource for huge armies opposing the Byzantine Empire, the Avar Khaganate and the Frankish Empire.
