The Bulgarian Monarchy. Volume II: Kings and Gods (765—893)
Българската монархия. Том 2. Царе и богове (765—893)
Category: First Bulgarian Kingdom
Language: Bulgarian

With the rise of the dynasty of the Bulgarian khan Krum, the ancestral gods decided to give a crucial battle to the all-conquering Christ. At first, as khan Krum's hordes prevailed over the Byzantine legions, their advantage seemed to be theirs. However, the more the Bulgarian army was exhausted, the clearer it became that the Christians gain a victory over them, not because they won the battle of the swords, but because they won the war of the souls. A relic from the Dark Ages, the pagan Bulgarian kingdom seemed doomed to disappear, as did the thriving kingdoms of the Scythians, Sarmatians and Alans, Huns, Avars and Khazars, Pechenegs, Uzi and Cumans. However, things turned out differently because of a great man who, at the cost of a lot of blood, converted his country to Christianity.
