   "The Mystery of the Metalurge" is a study dedicated to the new phase in the development of ancient art, related to the discovery and processing of metal. This is the Chalcolithic Period: the Varna Chalcolithic necropolis provided the first processed gold. Analysis of the material structure in the burials reveals a new worldview, a new social hierarchy, new mythological thinking, and a new aesthetic of the people of that time. Comparisons of the ideological system of the archaic smith with the myths and rituals of metallurgists from later eras show an extremely stable conception of the role of this professional class in society: along with poets, metallurgists are creators of a secondary, symbolic world. That is why their activity is always secret, revealed only in mystery rites.
