Arab-Byzantine Wars 7th—11th centuries
Арабско-Византийските войни VII—XI век
Language: Bulgarian
The wars between the Byzantium and the Arab Caliphate during 7th-11th centuries had a decisive impact on the civilizational development of the Mediterranean, Asia Minor, and the Caucasus region. These conflicts were not focused solely on the struggle for territory and resources, because at their core they were ideological, religious, and worldview clashes. Byzantium, as the successor to the Roman state tradition and a pillar of Christianity, exercised its rule in symbiosis with the Church. The Arab Caliphate, led by the new Islamic religion, became the basis for the creation and development of a number of successful state formations, ready to defend their legitimacy with fire and sword. The nature of the fighting was extremely dynamic, and sometimes the medieval Bulgarian kingdom played an important role in maintaining the balance of power. Arab-Byzantine military clashes dominated the lives of 20 generations over five centuries, creating lasting religious and cultural antagonisms, the lasting traces of which are still visible today.
