Tosho Spiridonov. Heraclea “Sintica” (with CD)
Language: Bulgarian with a short summary in English
Category: Ancient history
The proposed text discusses the use of a spolia inscription (which mentions the name of the Herculea settlement) for the needs of the archaeological excavations of the ancient polis near the village of Rupite, Southwest Bulgaria. The inscription was reused in a Late Antique necropolis marking the restoration of the rights of Heraclea as a city. The detailed analysis of the ancient sources shows that the identification of the excavated settlement with the ancient Heraclea Sintica is only a hypothesis.
