Writers and the People's Court. Part 3: The speech as a crime: 1944/1945
Category: Literature of People's Republic of Bulgaria
Писателите и народният съд. Част 3
Language: Bulgarian

The book offers a literary-historical account of the People’s Court and Bulgarian writers. It focuses on the rationale, mechanisms, and effects of the People’s Court, through which literary and media public discourse in Bulgaria was transformed after September 9, 1944. It outlines the general framework of judicial persecution through the institution of the People’s Court, emphasizing how the written or spoken word became a criminal act and turned the writer into a criminal. Various cases of writers killed “without trial or sentence” are cited. Alongside these, the article presents writers who were active participants in the work of the People’s Court—serving as prosecutors or judges, witnesses, authors of propaganda articles on the subject, as well as poets and satirists who created poems, satirical pieces, and propaganda songs in support of the court.
