Scattered Rosary Beads: Jewish Traces on the Streets of Plovdiv. Photo Album. Memories
Разпиляна броеница. Еврейски следи по пловдивските улици
Category: Jewish studies. Language: Bulgarian, English
More than 70 years ago the Jews in Plovdiv numbered approximately 7800 people. A big majority of then longed to go to Palestine, and later to Israel. But they left behind something very precious: their ancestral homes. These homes were enshrined in their memories forever, as well as the factories and shops they worked at, the streets of the Jewish neighborhood, the town of Plovdiv... Distinct memories uncovered houses built by Jews in the past, which have survived the vicissitudes of time. Massive houses with elegant forms, beatiful facades, bay windows, balconies with external staircases, solid ironwork porches. In some antechambers the year of construction was recorded. Unfortunatelly we do not have exact information about the architects (probably Josef Schnitter, Kamen Petkov, Paolo Motani, Henrich Muller, Stoykov etc.), but the appearance of these buildings differ from the traditional Koprivshtitsa houses in National Revival style, typical for old Plovdiv.
