The Book of the Bulgarians published by the Bulgarian writer, essayist and political activist Anton Strashimirov constitutes an elaborate essay in national characterology during the period of the I World War. Strashimirov stressed the internal heterogeneity of the Bulgarian people, composed by regional ethnic sub-groups with pronounced, and often incompatible features: Mysians, Thracians, Shops, Macedonians and Rupians.
