Gypsies/Roma in Bulgaria: Gender relations
Language: Bulgarian

Gypsies, who are living for centuries together with other ethnic groups in Bulgarian lands, have longest maintained patriarchal relationships. The leading role in the Roma family is played by the father's authority, the pride of place is given to the old age, a symbol of wisdom and rich life experience, and the socialization of adolescents is possible through the continuous contact between younger and older people. Male dominance has a special place in the psychological and historical context of traditional society and the role of the woman, limited within the home and family, is to listen to and obey the man.
