This book submits a comprehensive analysis of the woman figure as seen in the historical background of the Bulgarian Middle Ages. Chapter one centers around matters, dealing with the religious, moral, social and political, as well as aesthetical conceptions, notions and views pertinent to women, to have existed during both the pagan and Christian periods amid the medieval Bulgarian community. Chapter two treats the legal status of women in medieval Bulgaria, with a detailed analysis of the information available on the rights and obligations of women, as well as their legal protection, etc. having being featured. In the final third chapter, an attempt was made to establish the tangible presence of women in the economical, religious, and political life in the medieval Bulgarian state. Through juxtaposition of the particular notion (of women) and reality (in the way they were represented in the historical records), the study accounts for, possibly, a most vivid illustration of the position women held in medieval Bulgaria.
