Plamen Pavlov. Saints and spiritual leaders of Tarnovo

In the Middle Ages, Bulgaria was an important political power of the European continent. The second period in the history of medieval Bulgaria is inextricably linked with Tarnovo, the capital of the Bulgarian Kingdom. In view of medieval values and ideological and political ideas, Tarnovo was not only a political, cultural and spiritual, but also a sacred capital of the Bulgarians. In the 13th-14th centuries Tarnovo possessed a real sacral pantheon of relics. Relics of dozens of saints, miraculous icons, ancient books and works of art - both Bulgarian and brought from Byzantium, the Holy Places in Palestine and other countries - were kept here. The graves of most Bulgarian kings and patriarchs were in Tarnovo. Let us add the ancient monuments bequeathed by the Roman and early Byzantine era - columns, capitals, tombstones, and probably many more, which unfortunately have not reached us.
