What is a nation? We Bulgarians have been given a unique opportunity — to know what a nation is by understanding how a part of the Bulgarian people has become another "nation", a group with another national identity. What is unique in this case is that Macedonians preserve our common cultural identity, which in recent years more and more Bulgarians have rejected. Thus Bulgarians and Macedonians continue to wage a symbolic war on "European" terrain and in "European" arbitration. Will the two sides come to an adequate dialogue and mutual understanding? This will not happen if the so-called "opinion leaders" continue to pin their thinking on the stereotypes with which the "Macedonian issue" is overgrown and expect an external "arbitrator" to lead them to mutual understanding.
