The Medieval cemetery near the village of Kalenik was discovered accidentally in 2020 during the construction of the Hemus Motorway. The cemetery is located to the south-west of the village of Kalenik, Ugarchin Municipality, Lovech region. The large-scale blasting and excavation work carried out along the route of the motorway have affected a considerable area of the cemetery, destroying a huge number of graves. In western, eastern and southern directions the cemetery has been completely destroyed, only in the north, outside the motorway strip, we expected to find preserved graves. Untouched by the excavation is only a strip about 10 m wide, located across the motorway, which was also the target of our field survey. In the spring 2021, archaeological rescue excavations were carried out at an area of ca. 600 square meters that was not affected by the motorway construction. Thirty-eight graves were uncovered and investigated. In each grave was laid down one individual, in a supine position, with the head to the West.
