History of European integration: between the national and the global (1950—2010)

   The process of European integration is changing the face of the Old Continent in significant and lasting ways. To a large extent, integration has realised its objectives: it has secured peace and prosperity, and it has enhanced Europe's global role. The Europe of the 21st century is far from suffering from the difficulties and conflictual divisions of the 20th century. The end of the Cold War brings a new perspective to European unification, creating an opportunity to fully realise the vision of a united Europe, seen until recently as an unattainable dream. Seizing this opportunity is closely linked to knowledge of the history of European integration. This book asks: what are the interests that lead nation states to accept the limitation of their sovereignty in order to participate in the European integration project? How do states coalition to effectively defend these interests and what are the trade-offs between them?
