There is hardly a specialist in Roman imperial coinage or a collector of Roman coins in the world who has not heard of Marcianopolis and the village of Reka Devnya, located above its ruins. It was here, on November 10, 1929, that the first of the two largest known treasures of Roman silver coins, minted between the end of the 1st century BC and the middle of the 3rd century AD, was found. In 1929, 81,044 coins were delivered to museums in Varna and Sofia, and another 20,000 were scattered among the villagers.
