Българската силвонимия. Изследване на имената на местата, където растат или са расли гори у нас
Language: Bulgarian; Category: Linguistics
The main objective of this study is to identify the names of places where forests grow or have grown in Bulgaria. Place names are examined, and brief information is provided about the named objects—the forests. Little has been written on the interesting question (linguistic, geographical, and cultural-historical) of what names the people have given to the areas covered by forests. In the lands of Southeast Europe, 70–80% of the territory was covered by forests, yet only some of the forest complexes had names (Thracian and Greek). Over the course of several centuries, the Bulgars and Slavs penetrated all the forests and dotted them with landmarks. Many of the vast forest complexes were partially fragmented, and by the mid-16th century, the number of medium-sized and small complexes had already increased. Gradually, not only temporary but also permanent pastures and cultivated lands emerged among them. It is easy to see that many of today’s cultivated areas, unused steep slopes, and neighborhoods in villages and towns bear the names of former forests.
