The Physiologus: The Oldest (Alexandrian) Recension and its Slavonic Translations
Language: Bulgarian with English summary
Category: Old Bulgarian Literature

The Physiologus is a popular theological work which presents the basic Christian dogmas in an accessible form, through entertaining stories about the lives and natures of real and fabulous animals, plants and stones. It is debatable when it was written, since, on one hand, the earliest Greek manuscript in which it survives dates to the tenth century, but, on the other, quotations from and  references to its text are found in the works of some early Christian writers. Today it is assumed that the Physiologus originally appeared in Greek in the late second or early third century CE in Alexandria. Already in the following centuries, it was translated into Latin, Coptic, Ethiopic, Arabic, Syriac, Armenian and Georgian, and subsequently, into vernacular European languages. The Latin translations of the Physiologus became the basis of the bestiaries that would enjoy widespread popularity in mediaeval Western European literatures. Although made later than the other translations into different languages, the Old Bulgarian translation of the Physiologus is no less valuable: not only as part of the earliest history of the old Orthodox Slavic literatures but also because it has preserved many of the specific features of its mediaeval Greek original.
