Pictorial Invention in Netherlandish Manuscript Illumination of the Late Middle Ages: The Play of Illusion and Meaning
Category: Western European Art
Language: Bulgarian

Manuscripts, manufactured in the Low Countries during the Late Middle Ages and Renaissance, are surprisingly inventive. The craftsmen of Flemish illuminated manuscripts experimented with all aspects of their design, changing elements of their format, layout, script, decoration and illustration in new and challenging ways. In this study the author discusses prominent features of many of the most impressive illuminated manuscripts created by leading Flemish illuminators of the 15th and the 16th centuries.
