The unknown Volga Bulgaria
Language: Bulgarian
Category: Volga Bulgaria
Volga Bulgaria is the other Bulgarian country during the Middle Ages together with Danube Bulgaria. At the end of 9th and beginning of 10th century the Medieval state succeeded to conquer the neighboring nomadic tribes and to set at considerable areas in easternmost Europe. The emergence of Volga Bulgaria was a result of the movement of khan Kotrag — the son of Bulgarian khan Kubrat in the 7th century from the Azov Sea in northern direction. At the beginning the Proto-Bulgarian tribes, led by Kotrag, inhabited the basins of the Don and Donets Rivers. Decades later, to escape from the Khazar threat, they take on the Volga River.
Today, the territories of the Medieval Volga Bulgaria include the federal Russian republics of Tatarstan, Chuvashia, Bashkortostan inhabited by Muslim and Christian populations.
