Turkish faience from Varna (Treasures of the Archaeological museum — Varna)
Турски фаянс от Варна (Съкровищата на Варненския археологически музей)
Language: Bulgarian
The Varna Archaeological Museum has the richest collection in Bulgaria of faience vessels produced in some of the main centers of the Ottoman Empire — Iznik (old Byzantine Nicaea) and Kyutahya. Faience production began in the first half of the 16th century. Expensive faience vessels were sought after and exported to almost all European countries. They were also brought by sea to Varnaa and were owned by wealthy citizens who lived in the Christian part of the city (today known as the "Greek quarter").
