The book analyses abundant information which the Western travelers offer about the Balkans during the 14th and 15th centuries. Their accounts could be divided in the following categories:

1. Text providing geographical, historical and archaeological information

2. Text describing cities, city plans, fortifications, military facilities, shipyards, outstanding buildings, water supply, aqueducts, etc.

3. Texts referring to churches, monasteries, relics and holy places

4. Texts containing demographic data about the population of the Balkan Peninsula, e.g. about minority enclaves, isolated ethnic and social groups, specific customary practices, language, religion, manufacture, costume, agriculture, trade, wine production, wealth, pauperization and basic amenities.
