Bulgarian artist Prof. Dechko Uzunov (1899—1986) is one of the most outstanding names of Bulgarian visual arts. He was a painter, glass artist, ceramist, illustrator and teacher. His works are distinguished by their solid draughtsmanship, clear form and original colour schemes. Both his landscapes and compositions are highly appreciated, but he is best known as a portrait painter.
He studied at the Sofia Academy of Fine Arts from 1919—1922 and in München from 1922—1924. From 1932, he taught at the Academy of Arts, and from 1942—1963 as a full professor. In 1922, he was appointed as the youngest member of the National Society of Art in Bulgaria and became repeatedly president of the Union of Artists’ Associations in Bulgaria. Uzunov was also an honorary member of the Mexican and the Russian Art Academies. He lived and worked mostly in Sofia.
