   The origin of the Bulgarians and their ancestors, often referred as proto-Bulgars, is among the most discussed topics in medieval Bulgarian history. Where did the Bulgars come from? What are the roots of our people? What the ancient and the present-day Bulgarians have in common? These are just some of the questions that arise when discussing the problem. The study attempts to trace the entire history of the discussion, from medieval times to the present day, sifting the credible from the imaginary, the facts from the fallacies, the pure science from the ideological suggestions. The work examines the issue through the prism of archeology and history in interaction with paleogenetics / paleogenomics, which helps to clarify migrations and contacts, the formation of peoples from different components and vicissitudes of history, sometimes invisible to the pen of ancient authors.
