The Bulgarian-Italian handwritten dictionary of Father Maurizio of 1845: Study and text
Ръкописният българско-италиански речник на отец Маурицио от 1845 г.
Il vocabolario manoscritto bulgaro-italiano del padre Maurizio del 1845
Language: Bulgarian with summaries in English and Italian

The research is devoted to the personality of Father Maurizio da Castellazo and his contribution to the development of the Bulgarian Catholics' literature during the first half of the 19th century. New data on the activity of this missionary in the Bulgarian lands are presented and for the first time the full text of his Bulgarian-Italian dictionary from 1845 is published. This handwritten monument is kept in the National Historical Museum in Sofia and it is the oldest discovered Bulgarian-Italian manuscript dictionary. The publication is accompanied by a linguistic study. P. Maurizio da Castellazo's dictionary is valuable with its concrete parameters of the interlingual symmetry in sounds, letters, meanings, idiomatics, but just as important is the contemporary Bulgarian worldview, fixed in and by the words, the material and the spiritual culture of Bulgarians, and the ethno-cultural identity of the Bulgarian Catholics.

The handwritten Bulgarian-Italian dictionary of Father Maurizio is the only source discovered which contains words from the everyday life of Bulgarian Catholics during the 19th century. Therefore, the lexis selected by Father Maurizio is of interest not only to linguists, but also to ethnolinguistics and culturology specialists. Situated between the East and the West, Bulgarian Catholics are subject of various influences. The traditional literary words coexist with ottomanisms, croatisms and with words of Italian origin. The dictionary also contains a lot of dialectisms, as well as words which have previously not been manifested in lexicographic sources and which expand the scientific knowledge of the dialect of Bulgarian Catholics during the 19th century.
