The book creates an "inner space" in which literature is presented as a philosophy of Bulgarian history, of the Bulgarian "entry" into modern history during the Revival period. The Revival itself is seen as the Bulgarian "axial time" (Achsenzeit) between the indigenous "vertical" heritage (folklore, deep collective memory) and the external "horizontal" influences - the modernity in the 18th and 19th centuries. The book offers comparative typologies between the literature and culture of the Bulgarian Revival and some external contexts: Greece, Germany, France, America. It explores the mechanisms through which literature as a national-ideological "metanarrative" produces collective being in the form of a symbolic ideological "shadow" of history.
