Italy has come a long way before forming its modern statehood. The political division of the Apennine peninsula has deep roots — in its thousand-year history, the Italian people have been ruled by foreign rulers many times. By the beginning of the 19th century, there were dozens of separate states that differed in their structure and degree of dependence on external factors. The unification of Italy is a common goal for all of them, but the form of achieving this goal is the subject of serious controversy. Between 1848 and 1866, the Italians fought three wars against the Habsburg Empire, in which they relied on various allies. And thanks to their heroism and persistence, they achieved the much-desired political unity.
