   Philip II of Spain (15561598) of the House of Habsburg was one of the greatest kings in the history of Spain. In the years of his reign, the country reached the zenith of its power and ruled territories in all continents known at that time. Driven by a deep religious feeling, the "most Catholic King"  as he was called  despised Protestant doctrine and pursued an uncompromising foreign policy. During his reign, he engaged in military conflicts with the most important rulers of the time  Henry II, Suleiman the Magnificent and Elizabeth I  and his grim determination was not always the most successful strategy...
