The reason for writing this book is my desire to popularize a still practically unexplored part of the tradional Bulgarian material culture in the 17th—19th centuries, namely the ancient handmade locking systems, as well as security as a social phenomenon in the pre-industrial society. Unfortunatelly, Bulgarian ethnologist and historians do not pay special attention to the topic of security. Therefore, I will try to answer the question of how security technologies were developed in the pre-industrial society and what led to the big shanges in the 19th century in them. These changes are lagerly related to changes in society as a whole, because material culture is directly related to the development of society. The history of locking systems, in terms of the sequence and mutual interweaving of all constructions, shows the same trend as the overall development in our environment and culture, whicch is the trend towards and ever-increasing complexity of life. It is quite natural that only the level of technology constantly increases, but also that different fields of knowledge expand and cross each other.
