The Yuruks
Language: Bulgarian
The book is an attempt to look into the past of already extinct nomadic pastoral groups in the Balkans. Their study allows to explore the relationships between relatively closed and inaccessible small traditional worlds and the larger ones. For centuries the Yuruks have been a significant community in the Ottoman Balkans. It is formed on the basis of nomadic and tribal groups from Asia Minor established in Southeast Europe during and after the Ottoman conquest. Among them are part of the ancestors of today's Bulgarian Turks. The Yuruks has gone a long way from supporting the early Ottoman regime to a marginalized and relatively isolated community; from an influential factor in the life of Bulgarians and other Balkan peoples to today's small group that lived in about twenty Macedonian villages.
