In 1897, after another Eastern crisis in Skopije (Üsküp), Archimadrite Firmilian appeared as the protosingle of the Patriarchate of Constantinople and so a second Slavic Orthodox hierarch appeared in Skopije, besides the Bulgarian metropolitan from the side of the Exarchate. The final confirmation of Firmilian as titular bishop became Belgrade's main task on the road to dividing Macedonia into spheres of influence. The ruling of the Metropolitan of Skopije turned out to be the focus of interest to Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, Russia, Austria-Hungary and, of course, the Ottoman Empire, on whose territory this political and religious drama developed.
