    The monograph offers a comparative study of the social status of women in Western Europe during 5th9th centuries. The author presents a multi-dimensional study of the place of women in marital-family relations. The legal status of women is outlined through an analysis of their rights of ownership, possession and inheritance. The question of women as an object and subject of crime is aslo considered. The role of women in and outside of the family has been studied  their role in economy, politics and culture. The differences between particular aspects of the social status of women in the societies on both sides of the English Channel are explored.
