Original title: Династията Асеневци
Category: Second Bulgarian Kingdom
As a result of the conquest of Constantinople by the Fourth Crusade in April 1204, the Byzantine Empire ceased to exist. In its place a new political formation emerged — the Latin Empire. The new unknowns in the increasingly complex political situation in the Balkans are the context in which the first Assenids and their successors create and defend the Bulgarian medieval state.
