Einhard was part of Charlemagne's entourage and is better known as his biographer, having written The Life of the Emperor Charlemagne, while in the Annals he offers a broader view of the period. Nithard is a grandson of Charles and close to another of his grandsons, Charles the Bald. An active participant in the events of the division of the once-glorious empire between the contending heirs, he dutifully describes them for future generations in his Histories in four books.
