Asen Dynasty: The Bulgarian Empire. Rulers, Events, Context
Original title: Династията Асеневци
Category: Second Bulgarian Kingdom
Language: Bulgarian
As a result of the conquest of Constantinople by the Fourth Crusade in April 1204, the Byzantine Empire ceased to exist. In its place a new political formation emerged — the Latin Empire. The Bulgarian Kingdom must adapt its policy to the new circumstances. For the next thirty-five years the Latin Empire was the major and constant adversary of Bulgaria: it took the place of Byzantium as the main threat to the existence of Bulgaria and a barrier to its territorial expansion. The new unknowns in the increasingly complex political situation in the Balkans are the context in which the first Assenids and their successors create and defend the Bulgarian medieval state.
