   A wide range of zoomorphic and phantasmic creatures can be found represented in visual arts across the lands of Bulgaria during the Middle Ages. Such images were widely used through the entire medieval period and are present in all types of visual arts: stone and metal sculpture, ceramics, scrimshaw (carved bone), as well as in illuminated manuscripts. The often appears as separate of principal images or as elements of broader visual scenes of compositions. All of these can be brought under the general designation of zoomorphic images or motifs.

   This work deals with the entire body of such motifs represented in cultural monuments across the Bulgarian lands dating from 11th through the 14th century, one of its key objectives being to outline the different groups, scenes and compositions, while also identifying the various beasts, both real and phantasmic, and descrining their basic formal variants...
