     The book explores the continuity between paganism and Christianity in the history of the ancient and medieval town of Sozopol (Apollonia Pontica). Some little-known but significant circumstances shaped the city as an ancient polis and early Christian center, and later as an important spiritual and intellectual centers near Constantinople.

     The religious history of the city reflects a complex and multi-layered dynamism of counteraction, overlap and assimilation over the centuries of different religious traditions, as well as syncretism on several levels and stages. At the same time when the statue of Apollo Iatros, taken away by Mark Lucullus' troops, was destroyed on Capitoline Hill, in Sozopol a group of monks carried a box of holy relics and buried them under the altar of the newly built basilica on the island of St. John. A different, Christian colossus will replace Apollo the Healer and, as a token of favor, will stretch his hand over the "City of Salvation."
