   In ancient hydromythology water is a primary substance: both life and cosmos are born in it. The ocean is the river that surrounds the whole world. In archaic myths and rituals the river is a boundary and a path, it divides and unites; it is natural for it to appear in the main transitional rites: wedding and funeral. In ancient believes all rivers not only spring from the underworld (Hades), but eventually flow into it. That is why Tartarus, where blasphemers are imprisoned, is a swampy place. The rivers of ice and fire that flow in the underworld of eternal darkness are insurmountable obstacles to the return of souls back to the living world. As the soul descended into the underworld, it drank from the river of oblivion to forget its previous life. Only selected characters manage to drink from the source of Mnemosyne (the Memory) in order to preserve the memories, i.e. it's own personality.
